Iona Abbey

In 2014, AMA were appointed as Consulting Mechanical and Electrical Engineers for a major project involving the complete refurbishment of the accommodation at Iona Abbey. Working with Roots Design Partnership  and Wham Architecture  the project involved re-configuration of 23 Bedrooms, provision of accessible bedrooms and toilet/ shower facilities, new accessible entrance, refurbishment of Kitchen, offices, Common Room and  Refectory and extension to the separate Welcome Centre. The old cast iron heating system was completely renewed with underfloor heating being installed in the Refectory and the building insulation levels were greatly improved. The project was phased over a number of years to take account of funding availability and was completed in the Summer of 2020. The contractors and design team had to deal with the challenges of working in this Category A listed building with a surrounding site which is a Scheduled monument and with the remote location of the site, which could often be cut off from the mainland at short notice for several days because of inclement weather. Close teamwork with the Iona Community, Historic Environment Scotland, other members of the design team and the contractor helped ensure a successful project delivery.PHOTOGRAPHS
